Flexible Circuits

Professor John Rogers and his colleagues at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have collaborated with researchers in the US and Singapore to create a flexible circuit technology. The new circuit, which parallels existing rigid circuits in performance, while having the ability to be stretched and folded. The new circuits are mounted on silicone and measure a mere 1.5 microns thick. The circuit is mounted on pre-stretched silicone, so that when the silicone contracts the circuit forms a wavy relief pattern. This wave form allows the circuit to bend and fold with ease.
