Blogs & Feeds
What is a blog?
A blog, or weblog, is simply a type of website. Unlike
normal websites, blog content is arranged in reverse chronological order i.e.
the latest content appears at the top of the site. Also, the blog automatically
gives each post a permalink (see next question), thereby keeping an archive of content.
These are easily referenced. Blogs also allow for interactivity through
comments.
What is a permalink?
A permalink is a direct link to an individual post on a
blog. Other bloggers use permalinks in their own posts to link to the post(s)
they are referencing.
What is RSS? What is Atom?
RSS and Atom feeds are ways to keep updated with online
content. They are usually indicated by an orange RSS button. The URL for the button
is to be pasted in an aggregator or a feed reader. A more comprehensive explanation
can be found at http://cit.nus.edu.sg/softwareresources/rss.htm
What is a feed reader’s
function?
A feed reader (or aggregator) – you have one at http://moduleblog.nus.edu.sg/reader
– allows you to subscribe to feeds. You can keep up to date on the latest blog
posts, news and updates from many RSS-enabled websites.
